Reporting, SPECTRUM delivers to you each month the latest
technological information with behind-the-scenes stories to
put the news in context. Our team of experts covers
everything (from energy to medicine, politics to economics)
and everybody (business, industry, academia, government).
- Gain a competitive edge through
information access
IEEE publishes 25% of the world's state-of-the-art
electrotechnology information annually. Your membership, and
participation in the IEEE's technical Societies, is a ticket
to all of it.
- Have a voice on career and pocketbook issues
The IEEE addresses career and technology policy issues for
engineers, including tax and pension policy, competitiveness
in global markets and intellectual property protection. As a
member, you'll participate in these efforts as well as share
in the rewards.
- Ensure your company's competitive position by helping to
set worldwide
technical standards
As an IEEE member you can join the 30,000 fellow
professionals who are involved in the development of
standards. The IEEE has been active in the standards
development process since 1890, and today more than 700 IEEE
standards are in use around the world.
- Enhance your potential for professional success
By joining our profession's premier technical society, you
gain career benefits regardless of the level of your
participation. Simply by adding "Member, IEEE" to your
resume, you gain a competitive edge.
- Develop your leadership skills
By participating in IEEE volunteer activities, members gain
the experience and exposure needed for building leadership
ability. The IEEE provides opportunities and resources to
develop your skills -- management, organizational,
communications and marketing -- with colleagues in your
profession.
- Stay current with today's technology
Today's electrical engineering graduate may be
technologically obsolete within six years. That threat faces
all of us. But with the IEEE's
continuing education programs of video-conferences,
self-study tutorials and seminars -- all available at low
member prices -- you stay comfortably ahead of the six year
curve.
- Participate in an
international organization
With members in almost 150 countries, the IEEE provides a
global reach to build on. Active members share information
with colleagues throughout the world at technical
conferences, through local activities, and electronically.
- Become part of your
local technical community
As an IEEE member, you automatically become part of the
local IEEE organization and receive local and regional
newsletters, meeting announcements and other useful
information. Stay on the forefront of the technology right
where you live and work. And gain access to IEEE's resources
through local Section and Chapter volunteers, who help you
get the most from IEEE membership.
- Use
Ask*IEEE to get any engineering or computer science
article
Members can get any technical article or document ever
published quickly and inexpensively through Ask*IEEE, our
new document delivery service. For more information, call
1(800)949-IEEE or 1(415)259-5040 or email [askieee@ieee.org]

: : The Activities of the IEEE : :
- Technical Activities
An explosive growth in electrical, electronics and computer
engineering has led to increased specialization both in the
field and within the IEEE. Today nearly 40 specialized IEEE
technical Societies and Councils provide forums that
facilitate the exchange of information on the latest
technical advances, thereby enabling members to remain
competitive. Collectively, they organize more than 300
conferences each year around the world. IEEE technical
Societies are also responsible for an array of journals and
magazines that are regarded as pacesetters in their fields.
- The World's Leading Publisher in Electrotechnology
The IEEE is a recognized leader in
technical publishing, responsible for nearly one-fourth
of the annual output of the world's literature in
electrical, electronics and computer engineering and
science. This includes nearly 100
periodicals and more than 200 conference proceedings.
The
IEEE Press publishes many series of technical books,
including users' guides, handbooks and manuals that offer
practical, application-oriented information.
- The Institute's flagship publication is
SPECTRUM,
an award-winning monthly magazine that offers timely
articles on the theory and latest applications of
electrical, electronics and computer engineering. SPECTRUM
is provided to every IEEE member.
-
Local Activities
The Institute is divided geographically into 10
Regions which encompass nearly 300 units known as
Sections. Sections serve as local IEEE centers for member
activities and public outreach. Once of the primary
initiatives of IEEE Sections are the technical Chapters,
whose program of activities serve Section members with like
technical interests and Society memberships. Collectively,
IEEE Sections and Chapters hold nearly 5,000 meetings per
year, providing technical, professional and educational
opportunities for members. When you join the IEEE, you
automatically become a member of your local Section and,
where applicable, Chapters.
-
United States Activities
Through the United States Activities Board (USAB), the
Institute support the career and technology policy interests
of approximately 250,000 U.S. members. Activities include
frequent invited testimony on technical, social and economic
issues such as pension portability; position papers on
matters of public concern; participation in other U.S.
technical organizations; job fairs in many cities that link
engineers and prospective employers; workshops and seminars
on significant issues; and educational materials on career
maintenance and development.
-
Standards and Global Standardization
The Institute is a world leader in standards development,
providing authoritative, consensus-based documents to a
global marketplace in all branches of electrical,
electronics and computer engineering. IEEE Standards benefit
industry and the public, and are designed to meet user
requirements while ensuring safety. To achieve this, more
than 30,000 professionals integrate scientific research with
applications experience to determine the precise technical
requirements in a specific field. More than 700 published
IEEE Standards are currently available and recommended for
use, while approximately 80 new standards are published
yearly.
-
Educational Activities
Fast-moving advances in electrotechnology require that
professionals continually refresh their education to stay
current with new developments. The IEEE offers engineers and
their employers a fully integrated program of video
conferences, video tutorials and multi-media self-study
courses, which are regularly updated and revised to include
the latest topics. The Institute participates in the
accreditation of engineering, technology and computer
science programs at colleges and universities in the United
States, while IEEE technical Sections and Societies engage
in specialized and local education activities.
-
History Center
The Center for the History of Electrical Engineering,
located at Rutgers University, offers archival material from
some of the most important technology of modern times,
including energy development and utilization, the birth of
radio and television, the development of radar, and the
earliest computers.
- Awards
IEEE awards, presented each year, are international
benchmarks of technological excellence. Over the years, the
IEEE has honored such renowned members as Charles Steinmetz,
David Sarnoff, Robert Noyce and Akio Morita. Among the most
coveted honors the Institute bestows is the rank of IEEE
Fellow, accorded every year to a limited number of members
in recognition of unusual distinction in the engineering
profession.
- IEEE Foundation
The IEEE Foundation links contributors with worthy projects
supporting IEEE goals. Principal among these are the funding
of annual IEEE awards, special educational and public
information programs, and the
Center for the History of Electrical Engineering.
